On the road to Emmaus (Luke 24), two disciples encountered the risen Christ, though at first they did not recognize Him. As He walked with them, explained the Scriptures, and broke bread, something happened deep within them:

“Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32)

This story shows us how to keep the fire of devotion alive—ensuring, as Leviticus 6:12 13 reminds us, that the fire on the altar never goes out. So how can we cultivate hearts that burn for Jesus in our daily lives?

1. Be in God’s Presence Daily

Jesus walked with His disciples even when they didn’t realize it. In the same way, Christ walks with us in ordinary moments—not only in Sunday services or special events. When we learn to recognize His presence throughout the day, our everyday lives are transformed into holy encounters.

2. Daily Time in the Word

On the road, Jesus opened the Scriptures, revealing how everything pointed to Himself. In the same way, the Holy Spirit breathes life into the Bible when we read it with open hearts.

Make it a rhythm: read it, pray it, and invite God to reveal His truth to you. The written Word leads us to the Living Word, and Scripture becomes a source of daily revelation and renewal.

3. Prayer and Communion

Prayer is not only asking God for help—it’s a dialogue, a place of listening as well as speaking. Jesus meets us when we bring Him our struggles, doubts, and hopes (Matt. 6:6).

And just as He broke bread with the disciples, we are invited into communion with Him. This means intentional moments of fellowship with God, as well as fellowship with others. Sharing life, meals, and prayer with the body of Christ deepens our awareness of His presence and power.

4. Gospel Remembrance

When Jesus broke the bread, the disciples’ eyes were opened and they recognized Him. We too are called to remember the Gospel daily—the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Cor. 11:23–26).

By continually proclaiming and rehearsing the Good News to our own hearts, we allow the truth of Christ to shape us, renew us, and keep our hearts burning with love and devotion.

Hearts Ignited, Lives Sent

When we encounter Jesus daily—through His presence, His Word, prayer, communion, and Gospel remembrance—our hearts are set ablaze. This fire doesn’t stop with us. Just as the Emmaus disciples rushed back to share the news, true encounters with Christ propel us outward.

We are sent to testify, disciple, and participate in His mission, carrying the fire of Christ’s resurrection into the world.

🔥 May our hearts burn within us every day as we walk with Him!
